I do not plan on using the Tamiya MFU and was wondering what is needed to shift the 3 speed transmission? is it just another servo and spare channel? Will any 4 channel stick radio work for just shifting the transmission? can I use a 2.4ghz radiofor shifting the transmission? Thanks!

Yeah, if you are not going to use the MFU, any radio with a third channel can shift the tranny. You will need another servo as well. The kicker is most radios and receivers jump from 2 channel to 4 channel. So any 4 channel will work. There are a few 3 channel radios out there, but most will not work for shifting cause they usually on have two positions and you need at least three. There is a mod you can do to a Traxxas radio with a 3 position switch that will work for this also:

While that was true many years ago, most of the current 3 channel radios (apart from perhaps the 20 dollar China systems) can operate a 3 speed gearbox. And as a sidenote, not all four channel systems will work! The Airtronics/Sanwa M11X for instance will not cut it.
But now, I am picky. :sorry:

Really? I didn't know that the airtronics/sanwa won't work. Do you know why?
Good to hear that most 3 channel radios will do 3 positions.

McFig, thanks a lot for that link. I saw a few of those traxxas set-ups here and there, but never could figure out how the owners put them together.
